16When developing personal cleansing products, transparent soap-based body washes, facial cleansers and other high-pH cleansing systems often need to balance three important attributes: visual clarity, formulation viscosity and the sensory experience during use.
Compared with mildly acidic or neutral systems, however, higher pH conditions can significantly affect the performance of thickeners. Some rheology modifiers may provide insufficient thickening or reduce formulation transparency as the pH increases, making it difficult to achieve both the target viscosity and a clear appearance.
Selecting a rheology modifier suitable for alkaline conditions is therefore an important consideration when developing transparent soap-based products.
Repoly® 300HL, with the INCI name Acrylates Copolymer, is an alkali-swellable rheology modifier developed primarily for transparent soap-based formulations and other cleansing systems with relatively high pH levels.
In the test formulation shown, the light transmittance of the formulation containing Repoly® 300HL generally increased as the pH rose. Within a pH range of 7.5–8.0, the formulation achieved a viscosity of more than 100,000 mPa·s while maintaining high light transmittance.
These results indicate that, under the corresponding alkaline test conditions, Repoly® 300HL can deliver both high viscosity and good transparency, providing a useful rheological option for the development of transparent soap-based formulations.
When compared at the same active ingredient dosage, Repoly® 300HL delivered higher viscosity than Repoly® 100 and Repoly® 300.
It also demonstrated outstanding suspension performance among the three products tested. In addition to providing transparent thickening, Repoly® 300HL can therefore be considered for soap-based cleansing products that need to suspend flower petals, particles or other insoluble visual ingredients.
The results described above were obtained using the relevant test formulations and testing conditions. Actual performance may vary depending on the complete formulation, pH, raw-material dosage and manufacturing process. Further evaluation in the intended finished formulation is recommended.
